We have been watching a trend towards the return of penny collecting. Over the last six months Lincoln Cents have shown a significant price increase in the market. This increase has been in all grades. Many dealers believe this upswing in the Lincoln market will continue through 2009.
We are awaiting the four commemorative cents which are scheduled for release 2009. These coins commemorate the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln. These will be in high demand and every collection from pocket change to proof will want this edition.
At this time there is discussion the penny may be eliminated after 2009 which may be one of the causes of the new interest in this type of collection.
Sleeper Series
Many full time dealers in the market place feel the barber series (dimes, quarters & halves) is terribly undervalued. Many of the so called common dates have mintages under 1 Million.
These coins in fine or better command a premium as most of the coins were very well circulated during the period 1892 - 1916. A shrewd buyer will put together sets now, while prices are still reasonable.
Metals
Gold and Silver prices have gradually crept upward over the last several weeks. It's any body's guess if this trend will continue but many feel the gold market can reach $800 per ounce by the first of the year.
